Is Potenza Good for Acne Scarring?
Potenza (Cynosure’s RF microneedling platform) is one of the options clinicians consider for acne scarring, and for many patients it’s an effective part of a broader plan — but it isn’t a universal fix. Whether it’s the right tool depends on the scar type, depth, and skin tone involved. Suitability is confirmed in a consultation, not from a photo or a general description of “scarring.”
Which scars respond best to Potenza
Potenza tends to perform well on:
- Boxcar scars — broad, defined-edge scars where the RF energy can remodel the edges
- Deeper or more fibrotic scarring — where standard needling alone has plateaued
- A broader range of skin tones — because the RF energy is delivered at the needle tip rather than the skin’s surface, there’s a lower risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation than with ablative laser
Very deep ice-pick scars sometimes need a different or combined approach, and active breakouts need to be brought under control before any skin needling or RF programme begins.
What a Potenza course typically looks like
A standard course is around 2–4 sessions spaced 6–8 weeks apart, though this is individualised to the patient. Remodelling continues for 6–12 months after treatment, which is why scar revision is treated as a programme rather than a single appointment. Most patients see meaningful improvement over that time; individual results vary and depend on scar type, skin history, and how closely post-treatment care is followed.
How it’s decided
Before recommending Potenza (or any advanced skin device), we assess skin type, scar type and depth, current skincare actives, and whether active acne needs to be managed first. That assessment happens face to face, because scar revision that isn’t matched to the right modality is one of the most common reasons patients feel like “nothing has worked.”
