Does RF Microneedling Hurt?
Most patients describe RF microneedling as uncomfortable rather than painful, and topical numbing cream is applied for approximately 15 minutes beforehand to manage this. Sensation varies by area (the jawline and around the mouth tend to be more sensitive than the cheeks) and by needle depth, which is adjusted to the treatment goal.
What it actually feels like
Patients commonly describe a sensation like warm pinpricks or heat, rather than sharp pain. Deeper settings used for scar remodelling feel more intense than shallow settings used for general skin quality. Because Potenza delivers radiofrequency energy at the needle tip rather than across the skin’s surface, most patients tolerate it well once numbed.
Downtime after treatment
Expect redness and a sensation similar to mild sunburn for 24–48 hours, sometimes with pinpoint scabbing at deeper settings that resolves within a week. Makeup can usually be worn again the following day, though we advise against it on the day of treatment itself. Strict SPF is non-negotiable during the healing window.
Who might find it more uncomfortable
Patients with a lower pain threshold, more sensitive skin, or larger treatment areas may want to discuss additional comfort measures during their consultation. This is also where we confirm the treatment is appropriate in the first place — RF microneedling isn’t suited to active infections, certain skin conditions, or pregnancy.
If comfort during treatment is a concern, it’s worth raising it directly before booking. We’d rather adjust the plan than have you sit through something you’re not comfortable with.
